To embellish their stations and counter graffiti problems at the same time, Dutch Railways asked for a mural to be put on a wall facing the tracks on Castricum Station.
To emphasize respect for both property and the railway system, the large gravel known as ‘ballast’, used to keep railway sleepers in place, was taken from its original setting and as it were upgraded into semiprecious stones. On the mural we see a small house built from these stones. Tracks leading from the door suggest the inhabitants are animals. They refer to the lions in the Castricum coat of arms, as do the strange trees in the background.
